Multiscreen Do’s and Don’ts

We get questions all the time about what projector is the best choice, what size screen makes sense, how to control lighting, etc.

The list goes on and on and on.

It’s important to know that your setup will be unique. Even if you’re in a space with one projector and screen, it will be unique to that room. Ambient light is unique to that space, size is unique, and your event/service style will be unique.

So, how do you find the right projection equipment, media, and lighting elements? Let’s look at a list of do’s and don’t to get you started.



  • Test before you buy – I’ve seen countless stories of teams frustrated with the projector(s) they purchased because they are not the right need for the space.
  • Calculate your lens needs – the old “measure twice, cut once” saying in carpentry applies to projection as well. Having the right lens will ensure your projector setup is as good as it can be.


  • Simply look at lumens – projectors are more than just lumens. Native aspect ratio, contrast ratio, and lam life are all factors to consider.
  • Buy without comparing options – a lot of companies sell (or more specifically, market) the products that give them the best profit – that doesn’t mean it’s the best option. Compare models and brands to find what you need.
  • Go with the cheapest option – there’s usually a reason it’s the cheapest option. We’re not saying you blow your budget, but when you’re looking at costs, sometimes the cheapest option becomes an expensive option when you have to purchase something twice, replace cheap parts more often, or the product simply doesn’t meet your expectations

  • Test media in your environment – something that looks great on a computer might not translate well to projection, pixel mapping, or environmental projection.
  • Curate more than you need – plan, program, and prepare well for your event. But planning is more than just having what you need, it’s preparing for changes, contingencies, and emotions that will require alternatives to what you’ve got setup.


  • Assume – making assumptions means you’re probably not prepared well. Assuming something usually means if something could mess up, it probably will.
  • Only rely on free media – free media is great and we’ve got a bunch for you right here. However, free media isn’t always quality. It can be pixelated, glitchy, or just bad. Invest in your events. It will be worth the cost.



  • Match your lighting to your media – when creating a great environment, lighting and visuals match. They should compliment one another and work together.
  • Program your lights – again it’s all part of planning and preparing well. Take the time to focus lighting cues, matching the color and theme to your media in order to craft a great experience.

  • Turn everything all the way up – lights are bright, and can normally punch through even the brightest projectors. Being able to dim your lights and match the tone and brightness of the projectors will ensure your setup looks great. Also, having some extra gas to give at the big moments will make those big moments pop!
